King Jesus
As I was scrolling through social media I came across a post on Instagram by Apologetics Central that really caught my eye in terms of the topic of the images of Jesus. To be honest I do not know the backstory to this post or really much about the account itself but that is not what I am focusing on in this post. Again it was the image that caught my eye.
"The point is this: Jesus is king" is what the post says. With the crown to accompany the words, this is a great image to show the royalty of Jesus. However, as I began to think about what this post means I began to wonder. Do people really see Jesus as King? What does that even mean? Often some of the first images of Jesus that we think about are saviour, good shepherd or for some just a really good teacher etc. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that the devil is the god of this world. However, in Revelations 17:14 Jesus is called the "King of kings and Lord of lords," and that he will overcome the rulers of this world and be victorious. Even during Jesus' trial in John 18:37, when Jesus was asked by Pilate if he was king, Jesus confirmed that he was. Based on the Bible, Jesus is king and what he did on the cross allowed him to be victorious over death, sin and the Devil.
So what does this mean for all those who would see this image of Jesus on the post? Is Jesus king? For non-Christians, this may seem exclusive or confusing. Why is Jesus king and Mohammad is not? What is Jesus the king of? If people do not know that story of Jesus or believe that he is in fact God, they may not know why he would be king. The way that I see it is that speaking of the kingship of Christ is a great way to evangelize to unbelievers. The kingship of Christ directly links to the cross and his soon coming return. Christians need to recognize that their God is king, king over death, sin, the devil and ultimately over all. We serve a king and we are called to advance his kingdom.
The last thing that I want to talk about in regards to this image of Jesus is politics. I understand that when politics are brought up things can get very heated but I believe that seeing Jesus as king can affect how we view politics today in a positive way. I would like to think that I take my Christianity very seriously. I also take politics very seriously, however, what I have found is that sometimes when Christians get really caught up in politics, they forget to consider Jesus' place within it. Currently I am trying to balance politics and religion, always putting Jesus before all but also recognizing my responsibility to be an informed citizen on politics.
Having a human leader, but knowing that ultimately Jesus is king, can give people such hope. Whether one may be liberal or conservative, politicians will sometimes disappoint and hurt people, however knowing that Jesus is king, that he is sovereign and in control means that even if people mess up God still reigns supreme. This could very well be why when political leaders mess up, do something that people do not like, or that they were not supposed to do angers non-believers so much. To them, the prime minister, president or king is their only leader and no one else. If Christians can show non-believers that Jesus is king over all human authority through the Gospel then maybe there can be more hope for our future.
To be honest, finding this balance between politics and religion is something that I still struggle with. So what do you think? Can they be balanced? Is there a good way to balance them? What do you think it means that Jesus is king? Is Jesus king? Let me know what you think.
